Developing online gaming platforms is a major industry, and many companies choose to move in to the market simply because they see the growth figures and assume it must be easy to make fast money. They soon discover, however, that simply bringing a game to the marketplace requires flair, imagination, and often quite a considerable initial investment.
The reason it takes time is that online games have become sophisticated in a way that the early games designers never imagined. Modern gamers are no longer happy just to sit on front of a screen on their own, whiling away the hours as they work through the levels of their latest purchase. The move of gaming platforms to the online environment means that players want to interact with others, and have challenges that involve a degree of socialising and co-operation with other players around the world. So the development of an online game platform may start with just a good idea, but to make a success of that idea involves building that idea into the kind of online package that has all the features today’s gamers demand.
So, how does a jigsaw gaming website fit into today’s market? Is there a demand for such a platform, and does it meet the needs of the modern online gaming community?
A report from the Entertainment Software Association (EAS) in the United States confirms that there is a demand. The report, which was based on a 2013 survey of over 2000 US households, as well as industry sales figures, makes interesting reading and shows that the gamers are a diverse group, and interested in far more than just the most popular shooter style games.
The Facts of Online Gaming 2013
Among the key findings of the ESA report are:
- Most households have at least one games console, PC or smartphone.
- There are, on average, two gamers per household.
- The average age of game players is 30 (with 36% being over the age of 36).
- 45% of the people who buy games are female.
- Playing Puzzles, Board Game, Game Show, Trivia and Card Games account for 34% of the time spent playing.
- GamesAction, Sports, Strategy and Role-Playing games make up 26% of the time spent playing. Persistent Multi-player Universe make up 14% of the time.
- 32% of gamers play social games.
While these are figures for the US, it is believed they are representative of most of the developed countries in the world, which makes up the majority of the gaming market. What we see is that most households have gamers, and of all the time spent gaming, over a third is dedicated to the category that includes puzzles (including jigsaw puzzles) and board games. Bearing in mind that the US gaming market alone was worth over $20 Billion in 2012, this is not a segment to be sniffed at.
The second question was – can a free online jigsaw puzzles platforms meet the needs of the players? Again the answer is yes, provided the game designers have included the features now considered essential. This includes being able to play in an interactive way with other players online, having free online jigsaw puzzles available to try out the game and show to other players, and being able to upload pictures and create personalised jigsaw puzzles.
The gaming market is large enough, and the players diverse enough, to accommodate pretty much any type of game. It just has to be sophisticated and offers a range of features that the gamer to be part of the wider online gaming community.
